When I grow up
I want to be a bus driver

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
  • Learn to write an introductory letter for a potential employment opportunity
  • Understand the qualities required to be a bus driver
  • Identify their personal strengths and skills.

BEFORE YOU START

LEARNING PROCESS: Whole class

Explain that there are many employment opportunities available at Transperth; and have students list jobs that they are aware of (hopefully they can remember roles from their role play in 'Western Derby Day').

Introduce the job advertisement for the bus traineeship, and have individuals read the job description.

So they have the necessary documents to apply for this position, introduce the "Suddenly 20" page, and announce that everyone is now 20 years of age and they have:

  • A current West Australian drivers licence
  • A current Working with Children card
  • A Police clearance.
Using the letter writing scaffold, go though each section of the letter, outlining how this letter should be written and what information should be included. Refer back to the job description to highlight skills and qualities preferred for the position.

Share example letter and discuss.

LEARNING PROCESS: Individual activity

Have students begin writing their application letter as a draft using the scaffold as a guide (to be displayed on the white board).

Ask students to share their work with others during the writing process, to assist others, and acknowledge good work.

Once the draft is edited and completed, students are to use word their processing skills to type the letter, as is preferred in the real job application process.

ASSESSMENT

We’ve provided a Cover Letter rubric that you may wish to use at the start and end of the activity to discuss progress with the students.
