Planning For the Future

As students make their way across the Transperth network, they may not appreciate the planning efforts that have gone into it, or what is currently underway to ensure we deliver sustainable transport solutions for the future.

Over 200 students and their teachers, from 15 schools across Perth and as far as Dalyellup, attended the Year 12 Geography Workshop held at the State Library of WA.  Hosted by Transperth Education on the 31st of July, with guest speakers from Metronet and Department of Transport, students were introduced to the transportation issues facing Perth and what is currently in motion to address congestion.

Using data collected for the recently announced Morley Ellenbrook Line, students were privy to sensitive information which provided context to group activities, including applying a range of transportation solutions for those residing in the north east corridor.

“Remarkably, many of the solutions presented aligned very closely to the final announced alignment,” said David McMahon from Transperth Education.  “Students carefully considered population, business districts, environmental restrictions and overall cost to provide their very well thought out solutions to a complex issue.”

How we currently consider transport will look very different in the near future.  With such rapid changes ahead and a multitude of options on the horizon, the Department of Transport rounded out the workshop with an insight into the consideration of final mile transportation – how we get from mass transportation to our homes and places of work.

With the very rapid change to transportation around the corner, the team from Department of Transport discussed the future of autonomous and on-demand private, shared and public transportation, and shared scooters and bikes; the benefits, the issues we face and how they will integrate with public transport in the future.
