What's in a Name: Maylands Station

Author: Alex Gerrard

10 Mar 2025

The origin of the name Maylands harks back to CY O’Connor’s visionary plan for the Goldfields water pipeline.

A man named Mephan Ferguson – who was awarded the contract to manufacture the pipes – built a fabrication plant at a spot along the Eastern Railway which had been dubbed Falkirk, and a station was built there in the late 1890s to help the factory workers – who numbered almost 200 – get to and from work.

Falkirk would soon become known as Maylands, with many believing Ferguson had a hand in the name change to honour his aunt and daughter, both of whom were called May.

The relatively new Falkirk station was renamed Maylands around 1900.

Fun Fact: Maylands’ longest serving station master was F.R.H Coombs, who held the position from 1925 until 1943. He was the father of Herbert Coombs, the Reserve Bank of Australia’s first Governor.
