The Yanchep Rail Extension opened on Sunday, July 14, and the Joondalup Line was officially renamed the Yanchep Line.
WA Premier Roger Cook and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti officiated at the opening of stations at Alkimos, Eglinton, and Yanchep, where the highlights of a well-attended community fair were a performance by the choir from Yanchep Rise Primary School and a spray painting workshop as part of our Right Track education program.
PTA spokesman David Hynes said travel to the city from Yanchep was now only a 49-minute journey, costing just $4.68 with the two-zone fare cap.
“Also, school students can travel free during the week," he said.
Coinciding with the opening, Transperth rolled out a new bus network to provide locals with improved connectivity and higher-frequency services. To accommodate the new stations, 20 extra buses and more than a million additional bus service kilometres annually have been added.
"While most students will continue to have a one-bus journey, some will need to transfer between services," Mr Hynes said. "We have put on extra supervisory staff to help during peak times."
The new stations feature unique public art pieces that celebrate the local culture, history and environment and, in a bid to preserve the local ecosystem, there are three green fauna bridges, the first of their kind over rail in WA, ensuring safe passage for native wildlife. This project also included:
This extension means Transperth now operates a total of 9,020 train services every week.
A number of brochures have been prepared for students attending schools along the Yanchep Line. These have been customised for selected schools and are intended as a guide to planning your journey to and from school.
