Right Track Program teams up with Youth Futures Midland

The Public Transport Authority’s (PTA) Right Track program partnered with Youth Futures Midland throughout March, working with students from all year levels to encourage safer and more responsible decision-making when using public transport.

Spanning five weeks, the program focused on building understanding and respect between young people and transit officers while fostering awareness of public transport rules. During one of these weeks, students participated in an engaging session with transit officers, where they had the opportunity to ask candid questions—both good and bad—about their rights, responsibilities, and the potential legal implications of breaking transport regulations.

The impact of this single week was immediate and tangible. Since the program’s completion, students facing difficulty at Perth Station have approached the participating transit officers seeking assistance, demonstrating the strong rapport built during school-based interactions. This sense of familiarity provided them with a safety net, making them feel comfortable approaching officers for assistance—something they may have hesitated to do before.

Beyond discussions, the program also fostered creativity. Over the five-week period, students collaborated with local urban artists Darren Hutchens and Nathan Carrutha to explore Perth’s unique flora and fauna. Inspired by their research, they expressed their experiences through artwork, creating stunning pieces on canvas.

Looking ahead, the program is set to continue into Term 2, where students will refine and finalise their artwork alongside Hutchens and Carrutha. Their works will then be permanently installed at Success Hill Station as part of the PTA’s Urban Art Program, leaving a lasting impression on the community while reinforcing positive values around respect and responsibility.

With this initiative, the Right Track program continues its mission to empower young people and create a stronger, more connected public transport experience for everyone.
