Ensuring safe travel for about 2800 Shenton College students each day is no small feat. Recognising these challenges, the PTA’s Right Track program has launched a dedicated behaviour change campaign, working directly with students to reinforce the importance of safety, responsibility, and courtesy when using Transperth services.
The initiative addresses a growing concern surrounding student behaviour at Shenton Park Station and on public transport, with reports of safety violations, a lack of awareness toward transit officers' authority, and antisocial conduct. Understanding that safety is a shared responsibility, the Right Track program is focusing on empowering students to take ownership of their actions and make positive choices that ensure their wellbeing and the safety of those around them.
A key component of the campaign is direct engagement with students through school assemblies, where representatives highlight safety concerns and encourage students to shift their perspective. Rather than focusing solely on negative behaviours, the program aims to “flip the narrative” by recognising and rewarding students who demonstrate responsible, respectful, and safe behaviour on Transperth services.
By celebrating positive actions—such as giving up seats for others, following transit rules, and being mindful of fellow passengers—the program encourages students to become role models among their peers. This approach fosters a culture where students take pride in their conduct and understand the impact they have on their community, both as individuals and as representatives of Shenton College.
Right Track representative David McMahon emphasised the significance of this initiative:
“We know that moving a school of this size safely each day is challenging, and we need students to take responsibility for their safety. By acknowledging and rewarding those who make positive choices, we’re encouraging a shift in mindset—one that prioritises respect, responsibility, and safety for all.”
With this campaign, the PTA’s Right Track program is not just addressing immediate safety concerns but fostering long-term behavioural change. As students begin to see themselves as active contributors to a safer and more respectful transit environment, the hope is that these values will extend beyond their school years, ensuring a more responsible commuting culture for future generations.
The message is clear: safety is everyone’s responsibility. By working together, students, staff, and the PTA can create a safer, more respectful transit experience for all.
