Free travel for Students – Important Information for Schools

Great news for students and teachers! From Wednesday 5 February, students with a valid Student SmartRider can travel for free on all Transperth and Transregional services. This free travel entitlement is valid Monday to Friday until the end of the school year and aims to make public transport more accessible and affordable for students.

Tag on and off for free travel

To ensure students receive their free travel benefits, they must tag on and off every time they use public transport. Not tagging off will result in a default fare, which could affect their ability to travel.

Transperth Education’s Sibela Inajetovic explains: “A negative balance can occur when a default fare is charged. To avoid this, students must tag on and off correctly to ensure they are not charged unnecessarily.” If students experience issues with default fares, they can contact the Transperth InfoLine on 13 62 13 for assistance.

Bus tag on reminder

When boarding a bus, students must tag on at the front door. Tagging on at the rear doors will result in a default fare being charged. However, students can tag off at any door when exiting.

Excursions and group travel

This free travel initiative also extends to the Transperth Group Ticketing Program. This is a great opportunity for teachers to take students on excursions at minimal cost—only paying for accompanying teachers or adults at a discounted rate of $5.20 per adult per day. Schools need to book at least one week in advance via the Get On Board website.

Free travel for everyone – every Sunday!

In addition to free student travel, Every Sunday Free is available for all SmartRider users. Simply use a SmartRider on any Sunday and your journey will be completely free!
