Safe travel

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
  • Learn how to travel safely and responsibly using public transport
  • Explore the rules of using public transport
  • Create texts designed to persuade people to take responsibility when using public transport
  • Develop awareness about appropriate behaviour when using public transport.

BEFORE YOU START

LEARNING PROCESS: Whole class [5-10 minutes]

Introduce the topic of safety and have a discussion about why good behaviour matters when travelling on public transport. Invite students to share examples of when they may have witnessed poor behaviour on buses, trains or ferries and talk about what this made them think and feel and how poor behaviour may create safety risks.

Display the Learning Goals Rubric on the interactive whiteboard or provide copies of the rubric to the students and talk about the focus of their learning.

Having introduced the topic of safety and behaviour, watch the behaviour on public transport video.

LEARNING PROCESS: Whole class [20 minutes]

Display copies of the Two Hoots comic strips, Transperth’s Little Book of Rhyme and the give up your seat promotional poster on the interactive whiteboard or distribute printed copies.
Review and discuss the texts, drawing attention to the style of literature and text conventions. How is humour used to communicate a message? What techniques are used to persuade? Ask students to discuss the texts and ask them to consider whether they are an effective way of raising awareness of the rules relating to rights and responsibilities when using public transport.

Ask students to create their own text to promote positive behaviour when using public transport. They can use a comic strip format or write an alternative nursery rhyme. They could create a poster that promotes good behaviour on public transport. They might want to write a poem, rap or song. These could be started in class, but finished off at home and then used in a classroom display or performance to promote positive behaviour on public transport. They could also be used around the school or in school newsletters to promote safe and responsible travel when using public transport. If the students develop a song, poem or rap, perhaps this could be shared in a school assembly as a great way to promote good behaviour on public transport.

LEARNING PROCESS: Whole class [15 minutes]

Explain to the students that you are going to play Behaviour Charades. Divide students into groups of 4 or 5 and give them a Safety Charade card with a scenario written on it. Working together, each group has to act out the scenario to the rest of the class. The class has to identify what they’re doing wrong – guess what’s happening and say how they might put it right in a safe and responsible manner.

LEARNING PROCESS: If there’s time [10 minutes]

Using the Snakes & Ladders game, divide students into groups of 4 or 5 and provide them with some counters and a dice. Let the students play the game to explore some of the themes around behaviour.

Review the rubric and review what the students have learned.

EXTENSION

  • Ask the students to develop an information assembly about safety on public transport. They have to incorporate information they have learned during the in-class activities and use this to educate other members of the school community about show to travel safely and confidently
  • Give each student a copy of the 9 simple rules for riding on Transperth Trains and Buses. Ask students to write about why they think these rules are important for safe and responsible travel and ask them to sign up to these rules agreeing that they will adhere to them.

ASSESSMENT

We've provided a simple rubric that you may wish to use at the start and finish of the lesson to identify learning goals and discuss progression.

OVERVIEW

Travelling confidently and safely on public transport requires people to take responsibility for their actions. This set of resources helps students to question the role that rules play in society and think about adopting responsible behaviour when using public transport. This lesson would be best delivered in two parts to give students more time to develop key concepts and understandings.
